John 18: 28-30

28 After this, Jesus, [m]knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Quickword: Good Friday- Day 6 of Holy Week

We are now at day six of Holy Week, better know as Good Friday. This day and the events that unfold are anything but good. Jesus has been betrayed by Judas, arrested, beaten, falsely accused, tried and convicted by the authorities with the blessings of the religious leaders. By the 3rd hour of the day(9AM) l, Jesus is hanging on a cross at Calvary between two thieves. Over the next six hours Jesus would utter very few words as His body was broken and blood shed. It was at the 9th hour that He uttered, It is finished and gave up the ghost, clearly stated He Died.

- The Son of God had carried out the mission He took on when He left the glory of Heaven.

- The death of the Son of God was so overwhelming that the earth was covered with darkness as the sun ceased to shine.

- Good Friday ends with the body of Jesus being taken from the cross and placed in the borrowed tomb that evening.

Scholars suggest that it was around 6pm that the body of Jesus was placed in the borrowed tomb. The joy of good Friday is that the events of Friday are not the end of the story. Actually as painful as Friday, Day 6 is, we can take comfort in knowing that it is really the beginning of the next chapter of the story. However, today I asked you to place yourself in the shoes of the early believers and followers of Jesus. What must they have been feeling that Friday? a sense of hopelessness , the burden of grief, the shock of the death of the one believed to be the Savior. How do you feel on this Friday knowing He died for you and for me. That’s why to me it’s Good Friday.
