Mark 8:34-36
34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 Forwhoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?
Quickword: True Profit!
Jesus called His disciples along with the people and he began teach. He asked a question to all who would hear. The question being, What profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul? Profit in is defined as a valuable return. We live in a world where material wealth and earthly power are seen and valued. Yet this question posed by Jesus should cause us to pause and check our priorities.
- No earthly possessions are more valuable than the security of our souls.
- Material possession cannot replicate the peace of one’s soul
- Only what we do for the Lord will last.
In order for us to be profitable, we must pick up our crosses daily and follow Jesus. It is in this position of sacrificial service that we not only become profitable for ourselves, but we become great value in the building of the kingdom of God. There is no earthly possession that we can obtain that will come close to the value we have when our souls have been anchored in the Lord!
