Jeremiah 8: 22 Is there no balm in Gilead,
Is there no physician there?
Why then is there no recovery
For the health of the daughter of my people?
Will We Recover?
Jeremiah, the weeping Prophet proposes a question that I’m personally struggling with. The question being paraphrasing, why then is there no recovery of my people. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 2020 the death rate for Blacks/African Americans is generally higher than whites for heart disease, stroke, cancer, asthma, influenza and pneumonia, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and homicide. Beyond our physical demise, what about our spiritual deterioration. The prophets rhetoric questions that proceed this inquiry adds to the perplexity of the question, Yes, there is Balm in Gilead (America), Yes there are Physicians present, Medical and Spiritual, yet our people seem not to be recovering.
- Will we recover, when we understand our true identity as the Sons and Daughters of the most high God?
- Will we recover, when we make the care of all, especially the least among us and the marginalized a priority?
- Will we recover, when we move beyond the chaos, confusion and crisis of everyday life?
My Brothers and Sisters, I still remain hopeful in spite of our current situations and circumstances both individually and collectively. My hope does not reside in the benevolence of humanity. Yet, I am hopeful because I know our Balm is the Word of the Lord. The word reminds me In Jeremiah 29:11 “ For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Will We Recover, I believe we will, as long as we continue to trust God and are obedient to his word. Will we recover, yes, I believe we will if we remained faithful to God even when it seems hopeless. Will We Recover, yes, I believe we will because God is sovereign! You pray for me and I’ll pray for you and let’s watch God change things!!!!
